Tenderly moist, sweet and sticky, the recipe for this delicious pudding was given to Dr. Sheela Perumal by Sean, the eighty-something-year-old client of Our Lady's Hospice & Care Services, illustrating the simplicity of delicious wholesome family food. More and more recipes appeared; in uniquely beautiful penmanship, scrawled on the back of a brown paper bag, transcribed on old newspaper, dictated to a family member to pass on. This collection grew into The Mixing Bowl, a delectable collection of recipes that has a uniquely beating heart; each telling a different story, of love, of families in hardship and of friendship.
Every single recipe comes from the residents and clients of the Extended Care Unit (ECU) and The Community Reablement Unit (CRU) at Our Lady's Hospice & Care Services, Harold's Cross. In the recipes and the accompanying personal stories and illustrations lie years of life experience, wisdom and wit that we sometimes overlook in our elderly community. The Mixing Bowl is a glimpse into the rich and valuable lives of the men and women cared for every day in Our Lady's Hospice.
'Each recipe evokes a wonderful snippet from the life of its contributor and tells us that the food we eat is about so much more than sustenance. It is about sharing lives and pleasurable moments with friends and family.'
